Glossary
| Dharma Talk |
Sokai offers a commentary on the fundamental teachings of Buddhism which
serve as a foundation for Zen practice. With a clear grasp of the
basics of everyday Zen, we are able to manifest our wisdom in our work
and daily activities. Questions are always welcome. |
| Kinhin |
Walking meditation. |
| Sesshin |
An intensive training in Zen practice involving zazen, kinhin, chanting,
and monastic style meals; our committed effort is supported by the koan
practice and teishos offered by Kyozan Joshu Sasaki Roshi. Accomodations
and vegetarian meals are provided. |
| Teisho |
Kyozan Joshu Sasaki Roshi offers teisho each morning of a sesshin.
A teisho is a lecture on the Zen texts where a Zen Master offers his /
her insight into the nature of reality. A $10 donation for each teisho
is suggested for those who are attending a teisho only. |
| Zazen |
Sitting meditation. Though all meditation involves concentration
on an object (breath, mantra), zazen has a different emphasis than what
is commonly thought of as meditation. Sitting periods are limited
to 25 minutes. |
| Zazenkai |
A retreat where participants engage in zazen, kinhin, chanting, monastic
style meals, work periods, dharma talks, question and answer periods.
In place of a dharma talk we sometimes play the teishos of Kyozan Joshu
Sasaki Roshi. Accommodations and vegetarian meals are provided.
At the closing of the zazenkai, we celebrate and tell stories (sometimes
tall ones!). |
